Adult Social Care
Supporting communities throughout life
KCA works with practitioners supporting adults across a wide range of services including those concerned with domestic violence, drugs and alcohol misuse, older people, housing, mental health, dementia and homelessness.
'Recovery can only take place within the context of relationships; it cannot occur in isolation.'
Judith Harman, Trauma and recovery: the aftermath of violence - from domestic abuse to political terror (1997)
The need
KCA's mission statement 'to improve the lives of vulnerable people by changing the practice of those who work with them...' was produced in the recognition that vulnerability can persist or occur at any point through life. Where vulnerability is present, people need access to care and support either to travel safely through a point of crisis or more enduring support to live full lives. The sources of vulnerability in adulthood can be both causes and indicators of trauma and, as such, a trauma informed workforce delivering relationship-based services is essential to best practice.

'On a daily basis we get referrals from adults who have experience ACE. This [training] will ensure I have more confidence when assessing and designing their care plan.'

Our support
Since 2013, KCA has worked with organisations providing social care services for adults to raise practitioner awareness of the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences and toxic stress and to develop trauma informed practice.
2016 saw the publication of KCA's 'Why people need people' guide describing our universal human need for connected relationships right through our lives. This guide, along with KCA's 'Mending Hurts' model, has been useful in helping practitioners working with vulnerable adults to access and apply the neuroscience of stress, trauma, resilience and relationships to their day-to-day practice.

'As a domestic violence advisor, I will implement this learning in almost every aspect of my work, particularly the power in changing the narrative when speaking to clients and enabling resilience building through choice.'

Example Learning Journeys
Once we have a clear understanding of the training needs and the target audience, we will develop a learning journey that offers the best fit in terms of cost, target audience and practice development.
